just want to say there are at least 40,000 video games at least freely available on the internet of every conceivable genre. Some rivaling in quality to any game being made by these greedy publishers. Why does ANYONE bother with any shit they make anymore I just cannot understand. There is more gameplay out there than any person could play through in a lifetime.

Right?! I keep finding well-reviewed indie games on Steam for free every single day. And that’s just from playing around with the search input, slowly putting in letters until a free game pops up.

Also, there are plenty of AA and AAA games available for free on the high seas! Just need to know where to look!

I’d suggest just setting aside some time on a weekend to just nuke windows and dive in. Something like cachy os is great for gaming, or bazzite if you’d like the system files indeleble like steam os.

I ended up wiping my last windows install a few months back and I don’t miss it at all.

Make a live USB and just fiddle around with it. Note that a proper install on NVME will be much snappier. Don’t nuke Windows until you understand the basics of Linux and have decided you want to daily drive it. Back up your data of course. Dual boot is often more trouble that it’s worth, Windows loves to fuck up your bootloader and partitions, I got fed up unfucking it and began unplugging my Linux drives while updating Windows, and eventually just wiped it.

If you’re serious about it, try to source hardware that is well supported rather than just slap it on a random machine and hope for the best.

This is what I usually recommend to my friends who are interested if they have the hardware to spare. Sometimes I even gift them a machine if I have one to spare (mostly back when hardware was cheaper). This way you can also try out multiple distros without caring to find out which one you like best as well.

Your mother’s corpse had teeth, right?

Some teeth have fillings… some fillings are made of valuable metals.

The Disney corporation should exhume the corpse of your loved ones and sell their teeth on eBay - they need to make money… right?

It’s the only way to be sure every POSSIBLE angle has been milked.

You’re comparing a non-consensual crime to a voluntary consumer product. Unlawfully exhuming a corpse leaves the victim and family with zero say in the matter.

A video game gives you complete choice, if a developer milks a game with ads, you can choose to uninstall it and give them zero dollars. Try making an analogy that actually deals with voluntary choice, because grave robbery isn’t it.

Why not use a realistic analogy? Like how some car companies tried charging monthly subscriptions to activate built-in features like heated seats or remote start. BMW eventually killed that feature specifically because subscription sales were so extremely low. That’s a real example of consumer choice driving corporate decisions, not grave robbery.

Laws (and crimes) and consumer behaviors are governed by popular concensus of what we, the body politic, are willing to tolerate - neither are absolutes, and both are subject to change.

A realistic analogy would make my point less clearly than an exaggerated cartoon.

If the consumer market, or the corporations that govern it, decide that grave robbery is to be tolerated as a for-profit adventure…

well, we’ve very few tools with with to oppose them.

You’re right that social norms shift, but fundamental legal protections don’t evaporate overnight, especially in democratic nations with institutional checks. Suggesting that society will casually normalize grave robbery for profit within our lifetimes isn’t realistic.

A realistic analogy would make my point less clearly than an exaggerated cartoon.

Admitting that your argument relies on an “exaggerated cartoon” proves that your logic isn’t realistic. Video game ads are a voluntary consumer choice, but grave robbery is a non-consensual crime.

If you want a realistic corporate greed analogy, look at a company intentionally polluting the air and then selling clean air filters to profit off the damage. At least that deals with actual market behavior instead of shock value crime scenarios.

I might agree that it’s not morally wrong for them to add advertisements to milk more money out of people, but it’s definitely artistically wrong in that they are hugely compromising the thing they are making just for extra money.

And one might further argue that it’s morally wrong in that adding the advertisements is going to make the world a more frustrating, enshittified, dumbed-down place, just by a little bit.

Maybe a more apt comparison than “what if a Nazi killed you” or “what if somebody stole your mother’s teeth” would be what if you owned a food company and filled your food with sticks and rocks to save money. People would not be obligated to buy it, but it’s definitely wrong and doesn’t do anybody any good.

I think they were trying to make an argument regarding ethics and morality and didn’t do the best job by throwing in a strawman argument. That being said, television networks literally do it every day. That they’re doing it is arguably unethical, but if you’re expecting ethics and morality from a megacorp, especially Micro$oft, you’re a fool.

Everything else you said stands. Don’t use the product. Don’t give the company your money. Nobody’s forcing you to consume the media. If you do, don’t complain, you’re the fool who bought a game with ads.

What do you mean? You were the one who brought morality into this by comparing game developers to Nazi soldiers.

You claim that ‘just doing their job’ isn’t a valid defense, but how else am I supposed to look at it? It is literally their job to find new ways to monetize a product. If a company pushes a bad strategy, consumers can just stop playing and paying, like when BMW tried subscription heated seats and failed because of low sales. Blaming employees for doing what they are hired to do, while people keep playing the game, makes no sense. Trying new ways to make money isn’t a moral crime; it’s just business.

But what actually makes it bad? Is making a game and wanting to get a financial benefit out of it inherently wrong?

Why doesn’t that same logic apply to celebrities doing brand endorsements, shoving products down our throats that they probably don’t even use just because they are famous? And don’t forget product placement in movies.

Also, developing a modern video game can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and if it flops, it’s just a dead loss. Unlike movies, which can recoup losses through streaming deals or cable rights, a bad video game usually means nobody plays it and the studio loses everything. That is a massive financial risk.

Yes, there’s no reason you need to carry water for them. These dipshits shouldn’t be able to find a single comment online supporting their behavior. They should feel shitty and worthless about what they’re doing every second of their miserable existence. Companies can make plenty of money without enshittifying every single aspect of our lives.

Sure, and I have a lower threshold for it than most but these companies will keep tightening the screws forever because there will always be new people coming in where the current level of bullshit is normal and they can push those people even further. My resistance to it alone accomplishes nothing.

If Microsoft lets the patent sit idle and refuses to license it to others, it would be a very good thing for a few years. Let’s see what happens, though.

This is the time for the usual reminder that tech giants obtain something like 3000 patents each a year, by patenting everything under the sun. For the sole purpose that if one of them sues another for the violation of one such patent, the other can dig up a hundred of them to countersue.

Put ads in my games and I’ll stop playing your games. Simple as. Plenty of indies out there are more deserving of my time.

Indies, romhacks, fangames, recompilations, mods, etc can extend the life of any game nowadays.

I remember feeling bad about how the original PvZ was absolutely wasted on EA, who made sequels that are just mobile slop. Relatively recently I found out that a huge community exists to make more of the good stuff and it’s legitimately overwhelming how much community stuff there exists for this one game alone.

The other obvious example is Minecraft which for me has basically just been a platform for individual mod packs that are basically their own games. And of course, Skyrim. I’ll get back to that one day.

Am I turning into those people I used to see all over forums when I was a kid talking about games from the 90s that didn’t seem that compelling to me?

Indies have been far more satisfying for me over the last five years or so; many wonderful gems out there.

There was Prototype, which experimented with in game ads a while back. They sold ads on the billboards in NYC in the game. They seemed less obtrusive

Yeah, I actually wouldn’t mind that. It’s integrated and not all up your nose about it. Probably the only way in-game ads wouldn’t piss me off.

Football manager have always had “let’s kick racism out of football” and other NGOs represented on their banners - Because they had no clue what to do with it, I’m pretty sure there’s a settings option to replace them with real paid ads now

I wouldn’t mind ads like how Trackmania does it, you can disable them from options or have it show only TM related stuff (clubs, events, cotd).

Maybe Microsoft is patenting it so nobody will do this in the future. They have the best for the gamers in mind. /s

Wait, someone should make a gaming organization that just thinks of the most outlandish and ghoulish things to patent them so the big corpos can’t.

Truth be told, that actually might be a neat thing to do. Imagine trying to think up really scummy ways to inject advertising into games, create new forms of mtx, etc. just to patent them and sit on those patents.

I feel like it would do a bit of the Streisand effect since by patenting them you’re making them known, but that could be a bit better than letting someone else figure it out and get exclusive use of that patent for years. Either way anyone checking gaming patents can learn about it, but in one situation it’s used for the duration of the patent and in the other its not.
