I think a big part is conditioning. If all the walking & running you’ve ever done was shoeless, you’re just more able to run shoeless than someone who only takes their shoes off inside a modern home.
Keep in mind, when you’re not running on man made surfaces you’re often going to have a fine time barefoot. Man made (outdoor) surfaces are hard and not really great for bare feet.
Just gotta watch out for the not so great surfaces.
After running 5k all I can think of is fuck they did that without even having modern shoes. Like how?

They also ran on dirt and not tarmac or pavement.
It’s not so much running as walking is my understanding
