All FPS controller-based controls are inferior to keyboard+mouse.

Yes. This is why I never really liked Goldeneye that much. Just never got the big deal.

Halo is the first one that I thought was decent. I didn’t say it had good controls, I said decent 😂

Did you play Doom or something? GoldenEye predates basically every 3d shooter. It’s controls suck today even for controller standards but it did a lot for the FPS genre… more than halo ce.

Quake and quakeworld predates it by a year and frankly were the shit. Quakeworld team Fortress was 96 even and that’s when things really got popping. Windows 95 was having some good shit shooters. Half life just built on what quake already made awesome. Goldeneye came out in 97 and it looks like a poor stepchild compared to networked over IP quakeworld with full 3d and incredible verticality.

Yeah Quake was definitely big technically and in the niche of computer users of the time.

GoldenEye was in “everyone’s” home though… It’s probably generational, but I can’t think of anyone that wouldn’t know of it. Vs Quake, the only 2-3 people I know that would know of it at the time would have because they or their parents were computer nerds then.
