Ok, thank you for the info. I will probably stick to Android TV for now then.

I didn’t know about this device. This looks very interesting. I need to check how’s playback from Jellyfin in Kodi nowadays.

Games@lemmy.world•DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations - Official TrailerEnglish
1·17 days agoI upgraded from Nvidia 1060 to Radeon 5700xt second hand when DOOM Eternal came out in 2020. I haven’t dare to look at the GPU prices new or second hand since. DOOM the dark ages can wait at the end of my backlog. At the pace I’m going right now, I’ll revisit it when I reach retirement age.
In low speed it’s inaudible from a meter away. High speed is pretty loud.

1·18 days agoLike me Ethernet switch with 3 ports on the front and 1 on the side, if only my cable didn’t melt.
Depends. This year I bought a smart-crap air purifier. It can only be used connected to the manufacturer’s app, connected online.
Except, this smart-crap is powered by an ESP32 system on chip, a very popular development kit amongst DIYers and electronic hobbyists. Some smartass has already created a program to make use off 100% of this air purifier functionalities, connecting only to Home Assistant, completely locally! Unboxed the thing, tear it down, flash the chip, and BOOM ! Turn the smart-crap into a reasonable Home-Automation device. All thanks to the collective efforts of smart, altruistic people.
I am all for people buying all sorts of smart-crap devices if they hack them and share instructions online :D

91·18 days agoCan’t play DOOM the dark ages because of mandatory Ray tracing. My GPU is too old and I don’t have 1M€ right now to get a new one.
I have a small method I use. If I cannot find something and am searching for it. I take a mental note of the first place I looked for. Then, when I eventually find it, I put it back at the place I first thought of looking, because it must be a “logical” place for this thing to be.
As an insider of the automotive industry I can say:
- these devices are added due to regulations
- Yes. It is creepy
- functionality is computed and performed onboard the car, it doesn’t rely on any connection to the outside to function
- however, it could very well be sending data back to the mothership. They are legally obligated to get your explicit consent as per GDPR law
- the software is completely closed-source and there is no chance we get any information about it. It’s all private intellectual property. Actually, the Car manufacturers (in this case Renault) almost always requires all suppliers of such equipment to ensure there is ZERO Open-source code in the delivered product. Suppliers are audited to prove they have not reused any Open-source code, piece of code or libraries.

Technology@lemmy.world•GrapheneOS says Google is making life harder for rival operating systems and devicesEnglish
65·2 months agoExactly, it’s not only about fighting Google, it’s also about setting a better, more open standard for the rest of the market.
Recently my bank has rolled out a new mobile app now relying on Google wallet for NFC payment. I was able to use NFC payment on GrapheneOS on the old app, I can’t on the new one. The online banking stuff still works (for now) but no more mobile payment for me. I didn’t sign a fucking contract with Google, why would I hand over my payment data to them !

Games@lemmy.world•Valve Releases Steam Controller CAD Files Under Creative Commons LicenseEnglish
7·2 months agoThey understand well at Valve they must foster a community around their devices in order to give them a long commercial life-time. They can’t afford/don’t want to design new controllers to release every 2~3 years. Also, many will be willing to pay more for a device that is part of an ecosystem, having a community and 3rd parties creating this ecosystem for no extra cost it a complete win for them, it’s also a win for consumers twho get to do what they want with their purchase.
