Games@lemmy.world•The European Commission's answer to StopKillingGames: "[A]t this stage [the Commission] cannot propose a legal obligation to keep video games playable after they stop being provided commercially."English
3·7 days agothere are many other things that were considered unrealistical legal obligations. our current consumer protections as a whole most likely were opposed by businesses at first, expect at that time governments were less puppet theaters for corporations.
and what was being asked was not unreasonable at all. No one asked for complicated solutions like simulating entire mmo community or whatever, just that the damn corporations would let community handle it once they dont want to upkeep the servers anymore or that they wouldnt be allowed to literally steal the game from you.
The reason why businesses oppose stop killing games is because people would buy less if they could keep playing the old ones (and not even everyone, just portion of them.)
If we cant get even a little thing like this, what hope do we have with big things?

11·9 days agolist everyone who voted for rejection, dig up what else they have been up to, make sure people know and will not forget. no peace for these assholes. even if it doesnt do anything, just having them think it might do something is enough.
these people have prevented other laws too or voted for shitty ones. And, if naming and shaming them isnt part of democracy then we have no democracy at all as then actions can’t have consequences.

4·13 days agoonly way to stop them from being monopoly would require anti-consumer actions, penalizing them for providing better service than others (which is what i assume is the goal of the “competitors” such as epic so they dont have to provide good service to compete).
Imo, these things should always be done user interests first, companies will manage always anyway. In the worst case the ceo can buy few yacts less.

2·13 days agowell, i guess if they stop them from being monopoly it lowers the risk of valve going bad. if they went bad it would be a nightmare scenario for games. At the very least for me since proton is only way i can even play stuff easily on linux.

6·20 days agoyou can set permanent rules. Its very much active protection as in you have to actively fiddle with it when going to new sites, which also makes you more aware how much stuff they are running. So many sites load like 20 different things but need only 1 or 2 to function flawlessly.
Imo, it would be scary to browse without noscript, even with ublock on. For me its kind of like first line of defence, with ublock I can pretty safely test out what is needed for website to work and what isnt without worrying too much. Everything being blocked by default makes it more safe and if some website turns out to be really bad, i can set it as untrusted so i remember it later too if it appears again or if i go there again because i forgot.
And if I get really annoyed with fiddling with some website i want to work and which doesnt seem that threatening, i just set it temporarily all allowed.
