I know chip and RAM fabs are incredibly difficult and expensive to build, but how is the several trillion $ out there just up for grabs for anyone that can undercut the like 4 companies that have one not enough for tons of huge companies to say “I don’t care what it costs, I don’t care what you have to do, because even if I pay 50x what it costs nvidia to make a fab, I will still be scrooging like a villain”?

You have fewer rights at a border crossing for sure, but that doesn’t make it some sort of “constitution free zone”, mostly it means that they are allowed to conduct ‘routine’ searches and interviews without a warrant, and hold you for a certain amount of time, and deny you entry if they deem that necessary, all without a judge or warrant involved. How much protection you get from the 4th and 5th amendments is definitely different at the border than not at the border. But that does not mean you have zero rights at the border, they just want you to feel that way so you stay compliant.
Yeah, I hadn’t seen one drive by slowly in a quiet area before, so this is the first time I noticed it, but it sure sounded like the boots and/or joints were already toast on a 2-to-4 year-old truck, which is insane.
That’s exactly what I use remote start for. Just leave your car set to 68 or whatever and then when you remote start it will come up or down to temp. Even on my cheapass Chevy that’s 10 years old I can remote start it (including the HVAC) and also hold the “unlock” to start the defroster. Now I can’t actually change the temp the system is set at without getting in the car, thats true, but that’s a real edge case for me when I can just leave it set at room temp pretty much year round. Even the seats and steering wheel will heat up if I left that on beforehand. But maybe you do have a real need to tweak the temp and A/C values on the daily where you live, rather than just have the car resume where you left it at, I wouldn’t know.
All things that have worked just fine on cars for like at least a decade before the internet was ever invented. You are describing the exact functions of a key fob. They can even open the truck without the Internet!
Not sure why you think Google would exploit your navigation data but Porsche wouldn’t. I guarantee both are finding ways to make a profit by bundling and selling the enormous amounts of data users are feeding back to them by using their systems.

well they have the “border search exception” so at the border, no, they generally do not need a warrant for “routine searches” of electronic devices. Fucked up, but that is the law on the books and US courts have virtually always upheld it when it comes up.
My understanding is you can’t actually be forced (legally) to give up your phone’s PIN or password as part of a police search, because it violates the 5th amendment against self-incrimination, even at the border. Now will they still find a way to fuck up your day if you refuse to unlock your phone, sure, but I feel like saying “I have a right under the 5th Amendment to not reveal my password” is going to be a lot easier to defend than “I intentionally wiped/locked/bricked my phone when you asked to look through it.”

Correct, but now consider how much time and money has been spent over the decades on making sure that “trucks can do truck stuff” for combustion vs. electric drives. “it’s much harder” is true only in the context that thousands of years of engineering time have already been poured into diesel and gas trucks, and only a tiny fraction of that has yet been dedicated to electric. So it’s not “much harder” it just “hasn’t been funded yet at the level that the oil industry has provided combustion vehicles for nearly 100 years”.
Its just a ball rolling down a hill trying to find the lowest point, but its like a super fancy ball with a ton of rules, and the hills are really detailed with like little walls and bridges and stuff.
There’s going to be a massive boom in local llms if we get there. Already I have replaced ~80% of my paid token usage with a small local model running on my 64gb macbook pro, but being able to run a full-fidelity multi-hundred-billion parameter llm locally would be a game changer for my use case at least.
So are we just kind of admitting that there exists no way to expose any networked device to the internet securely? Because if it’s not possible for PLCs I don’t see why it would be possible for any device. If water utilities have to take these offline, then how does that advice not apply for every internet-capable device in every commercial and industrial facility worldwide?
