Yeah, I noticed similar too. I’ve been using a game mod for many years that is in active development, and its devs switched to very AI-heavy development earlier this year. They now add new features with lightning speed, but they are noticeably buggier and unreliable.

Like, if you’re sitting in front of a computer as part of your job, you’re using LLMs. And if you aren’t, you’re probably using them indirectly and don’t even know it.

This is a gross generalisation. If you don’t use Google (or use a search operator to go straight to its Web results), and disable Copilot in Windows/Office, that takes care of the most annoying instances of corporations pushing LLMs on you. In my experience, in more specialised software AI features tend to be opt-in rather than opt-out.

Late to the party, but I think what counts as NSFW is also blurry and subjective. Like I have all NSFW blocked on my account, but the other day when I checked out the “All” feed, it had some pics that I would consider soft porn. Fully clothed subjects, but very much emphasising specific body parts in a sexualised way (I think the two communities I saw were midriff and thighs). I found them uncomfortable, but most people probably wouldn’t call them outright NSFW.

And yeah, when you give a company license to do whatever they want with your data, “whatever they want” includes AI.

I think an important point is that with the decline of Pinterest’s popularity, most of their data was probably acquired many years before genAI became mainstream. (Like I think I only used it around 2008-2010.) So most users probably never imagined their data could be used for training like this in the future.

I used Ecosia for a few months last year, but it really struggled with more niche topics and searches in Hungarian. Also it kept re-enabling the AI search every other day, no matter how many times I disabled it. So in the end I switched to noai.duckduckgo.

Not sure if these are already addressed in PyLova, but some of my PieFed pain points are the notification page UI (namely the collapsed content previews and unintuitive mark as read buttons), and the lack of proper support for emoji (no shortcode suggestions like Lemmy/GitHub/etc. has, and the manual picker is unsearchable and missing many newer ones).

Not enforced by my work, but Photoshop is honestly the least painful to replace. I’m having a lot more trouble finding fully featured alternative to InDesign and Illustrator. Scribus looks pretty rough and Inkscape has an unintuitive UI and no proper CMYK support.

Need Adobe software for work. Want to play online games that have anti-cheat. Also like to run mods in my games.

I have a shitty old laptop for travelling that I’ll try to install Linux on this weekend, since I only need Firefox on that.

Hmm thanks, but yea a word editor would probably be missing a ton of layout and image features. The closest I’ve found was Scribus but it seems pretty rough.

I know of Krita, but I mostly use Photoshop for image editing, not painting. And it’s the one of the three I use the rarest and has the most alternatives, so my main pain points are the other two, as long as the three programs work well together. (Which is another weakness in FLOSS software, they don’t tend to come in “suites”. Not to say that Adobe apps don’t have a ton of little inconsistencies and idiosyncrasies, but at least they can smoothly work with each other’s files.)
