It’s unaffordable for those who don’t sail the high seas and buy a new rig every year. I have one that’s probably more than 5 years old by now and the only games I retrieve don’t require the latest and greatest. Plus, there are games more than a decade old with good graphics. Things haven’t gotten terribly better since. This channel regularly showcases some.

I think you’re both on the same side and find that there aren’t enough protections for consumers and that the existing ones are being ignored. You @Zoot@reddthat.com and @imecth@fedia.io are describing how things are currently working out in reality despite the laws, @MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip is describing how things are legally despite their disregard.

I just hope they don’t all go to “lemmy.world” or some huge instance. Regardless, even the @eucommission is understanding the value of the fediverse and has its own mastodon instance. The German government is also going more opensource, the Dutch government wants to have an alternative to GitHub that might join the fediverse, France has the DINUM which seems to want to aggressively leave US big tech behind.
One big problem I see with the EU finally noticing opensource is that they are new to the game and will take lobbying money. Solutions like BlueSky might easily lead them astray, but I seriously hope they will see “developed by USAians” and go “fuck that, we want Mastodon that’s spearheaded by a German non-profit”.
It’s very imaginable that more duds like BlueSky will pop up to distract from the fediverse and try to grab a piece of the monetary and attention pie the EU has.
We need to convince more of them to sync / mirror their content on peertube.

Again, stopping them from being a monopoly isn’t the goal here. If it were, I don’t even know how they would approach it, because from what I can tell, Valve owns the market so much because it simply is good.
But yeah, Valve going bad would be a catastrophe for gaming.

No need to put monopoly in quotes. Owning 85% of the market is a monopoly. Do you want them to reach 100% for you to go “yep, now it’s a monopoly, now we should do something”?
A monopoly doesn’t need monopolistic behaviour to be a monopoly. The monopolistic behaviour Steam has is what’s being targeted. If Steam were impeding competition in other ways, those would have to be dealt with too.
Just because you have a favourite friend, doesn’t mean they can’t do wrong.
People in the comments are vehemently supporting a monopolist because the monopolist is currently good. No wonder people are so easy to control. If you keep them distracted for long enough, you can take everything they own and they’ll only notice once the lights go off and the chair stolen from underneath their fat asses.
