Is it possible this is because of extra memory/storage costs? I thought Samsung sold way more fold/flip this past year so it seems weird to cancel the whole flip line to me

They are quite literally taking the “if you don’t like it, fork it yourself” approach. Who said they aren’t going to make changes/improvements on top of it?

I don’t see anyone else mentioning it but this is also probably because brave browser is published under the MPL license so the licenses are actually compatible between projects. They don’t want to implement completely from scratch because there is a compatible existing implementation that they can build on top of instead of starting from scratch.

I think the reason GrapheneOS never did a GSI is because most of their security improvements rely on specific hardware calls that GSI abstractions don’t provide access to. This probably would still be an improvement over lineage though, just not as secure as base Graphene is.

I think the problem is that the Matrix Foundation (non-profit org) is being slowly cannibalized by Element (for-profit, VC-funded) which ends up making their costs and profit expectations a lot higher.

Right now this is only impacting the matrix.org homeserver. However, this could eventually end up impacting protocol-level design choices that harm other instances as well. Sure, you could fork the protocol and clients, but now we’re talking about taking up the work that an entire organization had previously been doing. Not impossible if an existing organization like the FSF or Linux Foundation started backing something, but not a great place to be in either.
