Technology@lemmy.world•An 81-Year-Old Grandma Streaming Minecraft To Pay For Grandson’s Cancer Treatment Has Been SwattedEnglish
137·1 month agoIt’s 2026, there’s no longer an excuse for phone companies being unable to figure out who’s paying for the phone line. Make them liable if they can’t figure out where the call came from.

Technology@lemmy.world•KDE Plasma 6.7 Beta Introduces Plasma Bigscreen Mode for HTPCsEnglish
2·2 months agoAnnoyed at slow release processes since I want this but I also hate the risk of crapping up my system by adding a new source. It’ll be a dog’s age before I can get it on a stable version of Ubuntu, but I’ve had so much trouble installing big corpo programs I need on anything but Ubuntu stable that I’m afraid to leave it.

Technology@lemmy.world•KDE Plasma 6.7 Beta Introduces Plasma Bigscreen Mode for HTPCsEnglish
282·2 months agoReintroduces, really. Iirc it was originally made for plasma 5 and and was broken by changes in Plasma 6. This is “we fixed the stuff we broke”.

Android@lemmy.world•Google’s new gradient icons for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and other appsEnglish
16·2 months agoNormally I’d agree but google had a real problem with “everything is a simple red-yellow-blue-green outline” for a while so it’s been a long walk to get them to have actually distinct appearances.
These ones are good. Now just don’t change them.

0·9 months agoRight? The collective dismissal of Mastodon from leftist influencers when the Muskening happened was eye opening.
Like, there’s a collaborative, volunteer-based platform right over there. You want mutual aid? Open-source is as mutual-aid as it gets.
But it’s nerd shit.

Technology@lemmy.world•41% of fediverse instances have blocked threads so far!!!English
0·3 years agoHave you looked into the process of actually spinning up your own Mastodon instance? It’s not exactly the good old days of throwing together a LAMP box and installing PHPBB on it.

Technology@lemmy.world•41% of fediverse instances have blocked threads so far!!!English
0·3 years agoDumb. Federation is how we escape from every cloud-based service being a dictatorship of the person who owns the platform. That includes federating with privately own orgs to provide them an exit.
By all means make good tools to allow individual users to block Threads (or other private instances ruled by amoral coporations), but doing it at instance level is just dumb.
edit: also, number of instances doesn’t matter. Number of daily active users matters. Most users are on mastodon.social, mastodon.cloud, lemmy.world, hachyderm.io, lemmy.world, etc. And all of those are federating. The only large instance that is not federating with threads is mas.to

Technology@lemmy.world•Nikki Haley vows to abolish anonymous social media accounts: 'It's a national security threat'English
0·3 years agoSo how is she going to make them non-anonymous in a way that businesses can properly verify identity? Does every single social media site need to have its own ID analysis system for every state-ID? I mean that seems like it would be ridiculously hard.
For that to be practical, they’d need something nation-wide, and probably digital.
So, does she want to suggest to her fanbase a national digital ID? How would htat go?

Honestly, this can be good too. I’ve seen many places where parking is “free” and the end result is that there isn’t any parking available other than expensive private lots. The city is robbing itself then: It’s diverting the revenue from parking into private hands, which also encourages private parking lots which are an urban blight, and making it less convenient and affordable for business customers while a handful of people squat on the free parking all-day every-day.
Everybody would be happier if the street had affordably-priced meters. Everybody except for the people who are using that street-side parking all-day every-day, but those people are basically poaching very limited and valuable land from the municipality.
