I find myself unable to comprehend why anyone would do this, as it clearly will not alter the situation with Tibet.

• China just won’t care at all
• No other country is going to negatively engage China on Tibet because of one man’s act of suicide
• Self-Immolation was likely shocking the first few times it was done, but now only warrants a short, quickly forgotten news article
• Just like hunger strikes, it harms no one but the person doing it, and so effects zero actual change
• So he basically died to accomplish nothing whatsoever

I can only assume his last moments were spent in extreme pain and regret (which is what I think likely happens with most suicides that last long enough to allow for such a thing).

Unless the guy was severely depressed or was otherwise planning to off himself regardless, and just took this as a ‘justified’ way to end everything, this act is bizarre and nonsensical.

These heat waves have been basically yearly and yet my family in France and the UK for some reason remain allergic to just getting an air conditioner. Sure, I get it, you don’t need it most of the year, but this at this point not at least buying a portable unit is ridiculous (and yes I know about European windows, that’s why I suggested a portable, way easier to rig a temp mount for a hose with some thick plastic sheeting at the worst case of all of the windows in the house won’t work as needed for the typical mounting set up)

Not that Canadians can currently reasonably afford beef. Prices are insanely inflated.

Slavery isn’t illegal in the US under the US constitution specifically if you’re convicted of a crime. The anti slavery amendment specifically allows that loophole. Not sure why people think slavery was abolished there, when all that actually happened were a change in the situations allowing it.

The 13th amendment to the US constitution says this: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

That’s hardly why. More like many Canadians don’t want to go and visit/financially support an actively hostile country with a leader that repeatedly talks about annexing them.

People here going to US to snowbird are kind of considered some low end tier of traitor by many, in fact.

That’s stupid. Nothing stops you from just installing regular Ubuntu if you love snaps so much.
