  • [note: I thought the OP said “proton”]

Best case? atoms shrink slightly and some changes to how chemistry works

Realistic case? The change in nuclear binding energies renders protons unstable, making many elements unstable or radioactive. All matter suddenly becomes much heavier, changing gravity and internal pressure, which in turn disrupts stellar and planetary structures. Fusion reactions depend on precise mass differences between particles, which may alter how stars generate energy, or completely prevent them from forming altogether. Additionally, since proton mass is tied to the strong nuclear force, it will fundamentally alter physics, and it’s likely that protons will decay into neutrons, preventing atoms from existing at all.

The first wish would affect how fluids act under pressure, including how our blood would move throughout our bodies. Depending on the exact effects, the wisher may not even get the chance to make the second wish because their blood would either stop moving, or they would drop to ground as every capillary in their body ruptures causing an immediate loss of blood pressure, quickly followed by loss of consciousness and then death.

IF they live long enough to make the second wish, then they probably wouldn’t live long enough to make the third.

  • Hopefully your new therapist is a good fit! For myself, I had to learn how to be truly aware of what I was actually feeling and how to adequately communicate that to others. That may not be the case for you, but I spent most of my life believing that I was fine, calm, and collected; turns out that my baseline is what most people would call “stressed the fuck out.” Going to a psychologist and receiving my formal diagnosis was a eureka moment, and suddenly everything that I’ve struggled with for decades finally fell into place. I was so skilled at masking that even I didn’t realize how heavy of a psychological and emotion burden I had been carrying. I’m doing much better now, but still working on not being stressed out all the time.

As for your video game problem, that sounds a lot like me, especially with long narrative games like RPGs. Often I’ll play up to the last chapter of the game and decide to do all the side/optional content before taking on the final boss, but then I get bored, frustrated, or realize that I’ll need several dozen more hours of grinding to finish everything, and walk away. I was right at the final boss of Final Fantasy 12 when I stepped away and didn’t go back for five years. Ended up having to start all over again so that I could remember why I was there.

  • I actually did a take-home sleep test a few months ago, but since my results were >5 breathing disruptions an hour they said that I didn’t qualify for further testing or treatment. A colleague of mine told me to check out a different sleep doctor, one that wasn’t affiliated with a large medical network, so I did.

That doctor took one look at the results of the at-home study and realized what happened, because it happens all the time. The network-affiliated clinic that I went to used insurance industry guidelines, but the guidelines set by actual medical sleep specialists said that I am closer to 10 interruptions an hour, and qualified me for an in-lab study.

In short, the American medical system is a racket ran by insurance companies, and it prioritizes profit over positive outcomes. Which we all know already, but what is to be done about it?

  • Sorry for the delayed reply, I usually don’t hop on lemmy over the weekends.

It was definitely disruptive to my sleep, but I think I still got a few hours that they could use. The technician hooked up wires to each leg, several on my torso, and about six more on my scalp. I woke up in the middle of the night, which usually happens, and tossed and turned so much that the wires started coming loose. The technician had to come untangle me and helped me find a comfortable position. They also brought in a fan, which helped a lot.

My appointment to go over the results isn’t for another seven weeks. Hopefully my sleep was poor enough that I do get something to help me sleep better.

  • I relate deeply to what you said about people misunderstanding your intent. Have you heard of the “Double Empathy Problem?” A friend introduced me to the concept after I tried to explain the exhaustion that comes from spending an entire lifetime studying other people like a foreign culture just to appear “normal” enough to move through the world without friction. I spent enormous amounts of mental and emotional energy trying to understand other people well enough to coexist peacefully with them. What finally hit me, after learning about the Double Empathy Problem, was realizing how rarely that effort had ever been reciprocated.

So many neurodivergent people grow up believing they are deficient at empathy or communication. Neurotypical people frequently expect us to translate ourselves endlessly into something they find comfortable, while they remain largely unwilling to invest the effort in us. For me, decades spent working with that asymmetry has worn me down to the point where I now carry the mental and physical effects of that burnout nearly every day.

And honestly, I think it reflects a much broader problem in humanity itself. NTs are very good at dividing the world into “normal” and “other,” into “us” and “them.” Once someone is placed outside the boundaries of the familiar, many NTs stop trying to understand them at all. Being ND becomes moralized instead of explored, and the “others” are mistreated for it.

  • My coworkers have been printing for years, and between them they have several different brands, but they all recommended Bambu as they are easy to use, good quality, and decent price. So I got a Bambu P1S, and it’s been a great printer, but now I’ve learned that Bambu is trying to create a walled garden for their devices. If I had known about that before I had bought the it then I probably would have gone with a different brand.

My current project is designing and iterating a template for a concrete statuary I’ve wanted to put in front of my house since I bought it. I’m also prototyping various gizmos and gadgets for cat playtime; current project is a launcher + reel for their favorite toys.
