Thanks for the info, I am with some of those already, possum anyway. You are in S Africa right? I have a cool owl story, I was jogging on a mountain trail at night, in the US, and had an owl divebomb me, for like half a mile, she brushed my hair on one of the first goes. It was super creepy, I took off my shirt and helicoptered it after that. But if followed me for another half mile.

I heard later others had the same thing for years in that area.

Lol it tends to be the Barred owls that chase people. They always pop up in the news, especially during nesting seasons. There was one that grounded a police quad copter flying through its territory recently.

      I’m in southeast Pennsylvania.

This one was on the west coast, great horned I presume, or whatever subspecies they have west of the coastal mountains. All of their birds are subspecies. From alaska to chilie as I understand it.

But I had other weird stuff, camping in the upper midwest, at night something like a barred owl made a bunch of noises, next campsite 20 miles away, the same goddamned owl sounds, just on the the first day. I don’t know what kind though I was told barred, or barn idk.

Great Horned are, as you said, almost the entirety of the Americas with different subspecies throughout.

Barred used to be continental US, east of the Mississippi, but due to logging, have moved along the border with Canada and down the Pacific coast.

GHO is a deep hoot, Barred is “who cooks for you”, and Barn is a banshee shriek.

They can have territory of up to a few square miles, so you probably met the original one’s neighbor at the second site. 😁
