My theory is that snitty count would be biologically decoupled from the number of offspring in a single birth because virtually all snake species are self-reliant in terms of feeding themselves once they hatch and thus the role of the snitty would not be for feeding the offspring.

  • So here’s the thing. Right off the bat it’s hard to take you seriously when you don’t even seem to understand how the pre-order works for the Steam Machine – and that’s even with me agreeing with at least some of your overall sentiment. What compelling reason would they have to shut down the pre-order page earlier than advertised?

Honestly, none of us really know for sure 100% factually whether the Steam Machine will sell out or not, but it’s hard to take your questioning of it seriously when your understanding is so limited, and that’s the nice way of putting it.

Personally, I won’t be surprised either way. I suspect it will sell out, but like you, me, and millions (billions?) of other people, I also know that the price is laughable when appraised only by specs and anticipated performance metrics, so it also would not surprise me if they struggle with sales.

  • No, there’s no permanent physical damage that I’m aware of.

The caterpillar sting was intensely painful for an hour or two, and then afterwards for a couple of days I’d have random relapses of less severe stinging at the site.

The wheel bug bite was so long ago that my memory of it is a bit faded. I was bitten on the foot when I put my shoe on. The pain from that was like getting snapped in the foot by a searing hot bear trap, kind of all at once, and then it simmered down. However, I couldn’t comfortably wear a shoe for a day or two afterwards and I had to limp around because it was painful to walk.

  • I got stung by one of these or perhaps an oak slug caterpillar around 2 years ago. There was immediate pain, which got worse and worse with pain coming in waves. It felt like the pain was coming from dozens of little needle points in my hand. Before long I had to go inside to sit down because it was getting hard to focus on anything other than the intense stinging feeling.

The only thing that might compare was when I got bitten by a wheel bug when I was a kid.

One thing’s for sure, I’m going to sit at home and criticize every well-intentioned solution made in good faith that I see posted on the internet while I plant my eyes on a screen all day doing nothing substantial to help solve the problem or support the ones who might be able to make a difference.

  • I think there are still “read-only” clients. I haven’t looked in awhile, but I know there were some available via F-Droid (alternative app store) long after the API was cut off. I assume they use standard web scraping for grabbing content.

Also, I’m not sure if it still works, but I think you can still use open source clients that rely on the API, you just have to compile/build them yourself using your account’s own personal API key.

I haven’t looked into either of these in a while and definitely not an expert on the topic, but I’m sure if you’re interested there’s enough info out there to find a solution that works for you.

  • I would have loved to have been able to meet him and spend time talking with him when he was younger. His voice is basically THE voice that’s synonymous with nature documentaries for me. I mean, I wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to meet him now, but I feel like his time on this planet is very limited at this point, and it would almost feel selfish of me to take up any of what he’s got left.

  • HBO MAX MAX CINEMAX SHOWTIMEBOX HBO MAX PLUS PLUS GO or whatever the fuck it’s called now did this to me a while back when I was on their premium ad-free plan. They told me that the commercial breaks in the middle of shows advertising american football or some other sports crap weren’t ads because they were showcasing HBO content or some such. They claimed that those commercial breaks only show up at the beginning of movies/shows. When I sent them video of me watching something, 10 minutes into the show, and the ad aired, they still did not back down on that claim.

So, guess who hasn’t bothered with HBO MAX MAX CINEMAX SHOWTIMEBOX HBO MAX PLUS PLUS GO ever since.

  • I know. I was expecting issues, though. Steam pretty much always has issues with their site at the start of sales and new hardware launches, so this was entirely predictable.

On the flip side, every time this has happened when I was around to notice, there were obvious signs the site was failing from the get-go. Slow page loads, error messages, pages just not loading at all, etc. This time around, the site loaded up fine. Page navigation was quick as normal. Buttons worked. Cart worked. Checkout seemed to be working.

Then BAM. Error message when paying. I tried a few different payment methods and even checked on other devices.

So, I stepped away for a bit. Came back and I was surprised that the controllers were still in stock. Figured I’d try again. That time, I got a different error message when I attempted to pay. I thought maybe there’s something fishy with my cart/session so I removed the controller from my cart, expecting to re-add it and try checking out again. Only, when I went back to the controller page, it had flipped over to out of stock. It was literally only a matter of maybe 20 seconds since I’d last checked the page when it was showing as in stock. Missed it by that much.
